LaGRANGE
Welcome to "America's Greatest Little City"
LaGrange prides itself on providing a big city lifestyle with a small town atmosphere. With two colleges, an extensive arts community, wonderful parks and facilities for nearly every major sport, LaGrange offers much more than cities of similar size around the country. LaGrange offers history, shopping, art galleries, restaurants, movie theatres—virtually anything you could want, right downtown.

LaGrange's strong history is plainly acknowledged in the town square by a statue of General Marquis de Lafayette, a hero of the American Revolution who visited the as-yet-unnamed county seat in 1826 and remarked that it reminded him of his estate LaGrange in France. Other historic legends also thrive, such as that of the Nancy Harts, a group that "saved" the town during the Civil War by confronting a Union Army invasion when the captain refused to fight a battalion of women; the rags-to-riches story of Fuller Callaway, founder of Callaway Gardens; and the achievements of artisan Horace King, who traveled up from slavery to become one of the most respected designer and builder of covered bridges in the Southeast.
  • Many historic structures remain in the city, one of them is a National Historic Landmark:
Bellevue, former home of Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill,
    built from 1853 to1855.
  • Delight your senses at the famed LaGrange Hydrangea Festival. Take in an art exhibit in an 1892 Victorian building that used to be the Troup County Jail. Attend a performance by the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra or the Lafayette Ballet.
You'll be amazed that you can enjoy so much activity and still appreciate the gentle rhythm of small-town America. Truly, LaGrange embodies the best of both worlds. And if you ever long to supplement the offerings of "Main Street USA," you'll find the larger national chains represented at the LaGrange Mall. Here among the rolling hills of the Appalachian Range, the cities of Hogansville and West Point are known for charming shops, great antiques and wonderful restaurants.

LaGRANGE COLLEGE
LaGrange College is the oldest private college in Georgia, having been founded in 1831. It is a four-year liberal arts and sciences institution offering 53 academic and pre-professional programs. LaGrange is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the South's top 10 comprehensive colleges. The school frequently opens its doors to internationally recognized speakers and performers, and collegiate athletics give everyone a chance to cheer on the home team. Here, a free exchange of ideas is always welcome, and the friendliness that greets the casual visitor is refreshingly genuine.

LAMAR DODD ART CENTER
On the campus of LaGrange College you'll find the Lamar Dodd Art Center, which houses the Art Department and the visual arts museum of LaGrange College. The facility was funded by a grant from Callaway Foundation, Inc., and named in honor of celebrated Georgia artist Lamar Dodd, who took his first formal art classes at the College. Works held by the museum include a retrospective collection of Dodd's painting and drawings, the Josephine Altman Case Collection of Plains and Southwest American Indian Art, a Masters of Twentieth Century Photography Collection, as well as individual works by Rembrandt, Houdon, Dali, Picasso, Elaine and Willem DeKooning, Henry Moore, Robert Rauschenberg, Don Reitz, and many others.
