Hiking in North Carolina
The Settings of Black Mountain offers a wide variety of trails, from the simple to the elaborate, all created to work in synch with the natural landscape and interpret the natural beauty that surrounds you. We have partnered with international trail designers, Trail Dynamics, to develop trail systems that range from very detailed to very primitive, from the most moderate to the most challenging. Led by trail architect and President of the Professional Trailbuilders Association, Woody Keen, Trail Dynamics has created trails across the U. S., including those found at state parks, national forests, private universities, and the Biltmore Estate.

If you want to expand your horizons, the Blue Ridge Parkway is just eight miles away along Highway 70. Running for 469 miles, it is the longest and narrowest National Park in the country, and can take you to some of the most picturesque spots in North Carolina. Head north and hike the trails of Craggy Gardens, or have your breath taken away by the panoramic views atop Mount Mitchell, the tallest mountain in the Eastern United States. Head south on the parkway and visit Cold Mountain, made famous by Charles Frazier's book, and Mount Pisgah, home to the Graveyard Fields Trail and other unforgettable attractions.

Golf in North Carolina

Grove Park Inn: Many of the most spectacular courses in the region were designed by Donald Ross, including this course, which as been rated among the top 10 U.S. courses 100 years or older by Golf Digest magazine.

Biltmore Forest Country Club: Private golf club featuring 18 holes in historic surroundings.

Black Mountain Golf Course: Boasts one of the longest public holes of golf in the world at 747 yards par 6.

The Etowah Valley Country Club: Less than 30 minutes (19 miles) from Asheville, this course is listed in Golf Digest's 50 greatest golf destinations in the world. It is the former site of the Kemper Open Satellite Tournament.

Water Sports
From whitewater rafting on three of the top rivers in the U.S. to kicking back by the old swimming hole, western North Carolina is a great place for folks who don't mind getting their feet-and just about everything else-wet.

Hit the rapids on the French Broad, the Nantahala and the Nolichucky and find out why Outdoor magazine named Asheville the top whitewater destination in the U.S. If you like your water a little milder, make sure you visit the Carolina Hemlock Campground for mountain-cold water cascades straight from Mount Mitchell.

Green River and Lake Lure are also popular destinations for tubing, sunbathing and simply enjoying the beach. The Beach at Lake Lure served as the site for a famous scene in the film Dirty Dancing.

For something truly unusual, the Sliding Rock Natural Water Slide in the Pisgah National Forest is a 60-foot boulder that serves as a perfect launching pad for thousands of visitors each year, one that uses 11,000 gallons of water each minute.

Fishing
The trout streams in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains of North Carolina from Cherokee to Asheville to Boone host the best fishing streams in North Carolina. There are hundreds of miles of streams that anyone can fish.
